Off-peak hours: turn your empty time slots into revenue

Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., your gym is running at 20% capacity. This isn't inevitable. It's an untapped opportunity.

1. The problem of off-peak hours in fitness franchises

In a fitness club, fixed costs do not vary based on the number of members present. Rent, salaries, energy, and network royalties: everything adds up whether there are 5 or 150 people in the gym. Off-peak hours therefore represent a daily net loss that many managers accept as inevitable.

However, clubs that have worked on this issue seriously find that it is possible to generate between 10% and 25% in additional revenue during these slots, without heavy investment. To understand how your fixed costs are distributed, check out our article on the 7 KPIs to track every week.

2. Identify your truly off-peak slots

Before acting, you must measure precisely. Extract hourly footfall data from your management software for the last 3 months. You will get a typical attendance curve for your club.

Typical off-peak slots in an urban fitness franchise:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: all day depending on the brand

But every club has its own specifics. A club near a commercial area will have a different lull than a club in a residential area. Do not assume: measure.

3. The 5 strategies that work

These approaches are compatible with franchise constraints and actionable without a large budget.

Strategy 1: Targeted hourly offers: Create a discounted "Off-Peak" or "Active Lunch" membership (15-25% off), available only during off-peak hours. This offer attracts people who cannot afford the full price or who have flexible schedules (freelancers, students, active retirees, or those in career transition).

Franchise note: check that your network allows for local pricing differentiation before launching this offer. To better understand what the network mandates and what you control, consult our dedicated guide.

Strategy 2: 30-minute express classes: Offer short group classes (30 minutes) during lunch hours, targeting professionals on their lunch break. Express HIIT, flash Pilates, or stretching: these formats are designed to fit the time constraints of nearby office workers.

If your club is located near an office district, the 12 PM to 1 PM slot can become one of your most profitable hours.

Strategy 3: Local corporate partnerships: Reach out to businesses and government offices within a 500-meter radius to offer group wellness sessions during off-peak hours. A 45-minute session for 8 to 15 employees, billed to the company, utilizes your empty facility and generates regular, fixed income.

Bonus: these employees often become individual members afterward.

Strategy 4: Space rental: During the quietest times (e.g., 9 AM to 11 AM on weekdays), rent your studio or a dedicated space to external providers: freelance trainers, physical therapists, osteopaths, or yoga instructors. They bring their own clientele, and some of these clients will become yours.

Franchise note: this strategy often requires network approval. Check your contract.

Strategy 5: Proactive communication about available time slots: The least expensive and most underutilized solution. Display off-peak hours at the front desk. Send a push notification on Tuesday mornings at 9 AM: "Gym empty this lunch hour, come in with no wait." Create weekly Instagram content highlighting the "zen" moments at the gym.

Many members avoid the gym because of the crowds. They don't realize there are quiet times. Let them know.

4. Measuring the impact

Track these 3 indicators before and after implementing your actions:

  1. Foot traffic during targeted time slots (before/after, week over week).
  2. Revenue generated from new offers (off-peak memberships, express classes, partnerships).
  3. Average occupancy rate during off-peak hours (goal: increase from 20% to 40%+).

Action plan: this week

Day 1: extract your hourly foot traffic data from the last 3 months.

Day 2: identify your 3 quietest time slots.

Day 3: choose 1 strategy from the 5 listed above.

Day 4: check for compatibility with your franchise agreement if necessary.

Day 5: launch an initial 4-week test, measure, and adjust.
