TOP 6: CSR commitments on the Les Terrasses du Port shopping center in Marseille by Marie Canton
Les Terrasses du Port, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024, is establishing itself as a pioneer in ecological initiatives. A pioneer in reducing CO2 emissions, this shopping center clearly stands out from its French counterparts thanks to concrete and ambitious actions. Under the direction of Marie Canton, Les Terrasses du Port is resolutely committed to an exemplary ecological transition, while actively contributing to local sustainable development.
CSR commitment n° 1: Integrated waste management
One of the most significant approaches taken by Les Terrasses du Port concerns integrated waste management. The center has a waste center that sorts and valorizes no less than 17 different material flows, including glass, cardboard, and plastic. In addition, thanks to the installation of balers, the center optimizes the transport of waste. Marie Canton points out that this approach makes it possible to significantly reduce the frequency of pick-up trucks, from every two days to only once every ten days. This represents a significant reduction in the carbon footprint, fully integrating the shopping center into its CSR commitments.
CSR commitment n° 2: Valorization of bio-waste thanks to Terra Metha
Another key commitment of Les Terrasses du Port: the valorization of bio-waste. The shopping center has the Terra Metha micro-methanization station, built by Bee & Co, which treats organic waste from restaurants. This system transforms bio-waste into compost, water, heat, and electricity. Marie Canton highlights the impact of this initiative, which makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 tons per year, thanks to the elimination of trucks that previously had to transport bio-waste out of Marseille. Now, everything is handled on site, further strengthening the local footprint of the center's CSR commitments.
CSR commitment no. 3:5000 m² of photovoltaic panels for green energy
In line with its ecological actions, Les Terrasses du Port installed 5,000 m² of photovoltaic panels on the roof. This installation supplies an average of 40% of the center's electricity needs over the year. Marie Canton explains that the long-term objective is to extend this area in order to produce enough electricity to also supply external needs. This renewable energy strategy not only reduces CO2 emissions but also positions Les Terrasses du Port as a key player in the production of green energy, thus confirming their leading role in terms of CSR commitments.
CSR commitment no. 4: Abandoning gas thanks to marine geothermal energy
Les Terrasses du Port's commitment to the energy transition does not end there. Thanks to marine geothermal energy and the Thassalia network, the center has eliminated its dependence on gas. This sustainable system powers heating and air conditioning using marine energy, a renewable natural resource. Marie Canton insists on the innovative nature of this system, which proves that environmentally friendly energy management is not only possible but also beneficial. This strategic choice is fully in line with Les Terrasses du Port's CSR approach, by reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.
CSR commitment no. 5: The “Collecting Terraces”: For sustainable and inclusive fashion
In addition to its energy and environmental commitments, Les Terrasses du Port is also committed to textile recycling with the “terrace collection”. This project invites customers to drop off their used clothing, which is then recycled by Frip'Insertion. This organization transforms clothes and household linen into upcycled items, while promoting professional integration. Marie Canton insists on the double impact of this action, which combines ecological responsibility and social contribution. Les Terrasses du Port thus prove that it is possible to combine the circular economy and support for solidarity initiatives.
CSR commitment no. 6: Active support for entrepreneurship in Marseille
Les Terrasses du Port does not stop at ecological initiatives. The center actively supports entrepreneurship in Marseille, contributing to the economic growth of the region by encouraging innovative and responsible projects. Marie Canton recalls that the commitment of Les Terrasses du Port is not limited to the environment, but also extends to supporting local entrepreneurs. Through partnerships and concrete actions, the shopping center contributes to strengthening the economic fabric of the city, thus creating a lasting positive impact.
With bold and innovative actions, Les Terrasses du Port, led by Marie Canton, embodies a CSR commitment model for shopping centers. Whether it's waste management, green energy, or local support, this Marseille site continues to stand out as a committed and visionary player in protecting the environment and supporting the local economy.
